Program Overview

Women Rising is a leadership and empowerment program for women and gender-diverse individuals. Through free community events, participants engage in inspiring discussions, skill-building activities, and networking opportunities. Each workshop focuses on a specific topic and features at least one facilitator or guest speaker, fostering a sense of community, support, and empowerment. Designed to help women advance in their careers and lives, Women Rising provides valuable insights, practical tools, and connections that open doors to new opportunities for professional and personal growth.

Mithila Karnik-Adarkar

With a decade-plus long experience as an artiste manager/publicist in the Indian film industry, Mithila Karnik-Adarkar moved to Canada in 2016 with her husband. Mithila lives in Port Coquitlam in BC, has served on the city’s EDI Roundtable Advisory and has been instrumental, as a community volunteer, in passionately advocating for diversity and inclusion through cultural events, networking experiences and women’s day initiatives. She’s mother to a pliant boxer (named Hagrid!) and a strong-willed daughter and together with her husband, loves her neighborhood breweries, trails and the library!

Tamara Pongracz

Tamara is the Department Head, of the BCIT Trades Access group. An advocate of Trades and Apprenticeship Training, Tamara is an Inter-Provincial Certified Plumber (RSE - 1995) with a Master of Education Degree (2010) from Simon Fraser University. Ms. Pongracz was invited to contribute to the BCIT Women in Trades Program in 1996 and shortly after decided to leave industry to join BCIT.

She has been a Department Head for over 25 years. The programs and services offered through Trades Access have helped thousands of folks find their skilled trades career match. Tamara is especially proud of the hundreds of tradeswomen she has assisted into successful, well-paying trades careers. Active in the BCIT community, Tamara was elected by her peers to be the Faculty Representative on BCIT’s Board of Governors. Tamara contributes to the Construction Foundation of BC as an Executive Board Director. Ms. Pongracz received a BCIT Teaching Excellence Award in 2005, an Employee Excellence Award (Inclusivity) in 2019, and was recognized by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association as Outstanding Woman in Construction 2007. Tamara is a proud descendant of the Haida Nation (Old Massett Village Council).

Dhaliwal
Rabiah Dhaliwal

Rabiah Dhaliwal is an award-winning mental health activist and humanitarian. She is dedicated to using her voice to champion awareness of mental health inequities and disability justice. At just 19, she testified before the House of Commons to introduce a Mental Health Parity Act. She is the Founder and Director of the Voices For Hope Foundation, a grass-roots non-profit that works to improve the perception of mental health and amplify the experiences of historically marginalized communities.

She has created a healing grant program for Indigenous communities, led COVID-19 relief initiatives in partnership with the Duke of Edinburgh, and donated wellness kits and art supplies to frontline workers, Indigenous youth, and the unhoused residents of the DTES. In 2024, with support from Canada’s Walk of Fame, Rabiah curated ‘TouchScapes,’ the first 3D-printed art exhibition in Western Canada's history designed for individuals with visual impairments and other sensory needs, promoting inclusivity in the arts. She also helped establish sensory rooms at UBC offering safe havens for students experiencing sensory overload. Rabiah was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, was Miss Canada 1st Runner Up, and received the B.C. Medal of Good Citizenship for her extraordinary service to the province.

Susan’s passion for accessible advocacy emerged after she became a permanent wheelchair user, experiencing firsthand the daily challenges in public spaces that highlight accessibility as a human rights issue. With over 20 years of experience in progressive human resources, she brings a deep understanding of legislative navigation and a talent for fostering cooperative relationships. Susan is committed to raising awareness and sparking meaningful dialogue through extensive research and ongoing engagement with key stakeholders. Her goal is to drive actionable change that ensures accessibility and equality for all. By collaborating with like-minded advocates, Susan works towards a future where barriers are dismantled, and every individual can thrive in an inclusive, accessible society. Through her advocacy, she strives to create lasting impact and ensure that human rights are not just ideals, but realities for all.

Preeti Singh

Preeti is a professional dance instructor with over 5 years of experience, specializing in after-school programs, event choreography, and fitness dance classes. She is a certified Zumba and Bombay Jam®️ instructor, passionate about creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment for both kids and adults. Her teaching style provides a structured yet flexible schedule that includes warm-ups, dance exercises, creative movement, and cool-down activities to ensure a balanced and enjoyable experience for all participants. Preeti has had the privilege of choreographing for events with the cities of Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Langley, and Surrey, creating wedding dance choreography for couples, and has worked in a dance studio as a Bollywood Dance Fitness Instructor. A mother of two young adults, and a former doula and prenatal educator, Islena has taught yoga teacher trainings and retreats world-wide and written for health content media. 

As a somatic bodyworker and wellness educator, she teaches nervous system regulation and holistic wellness practices, mentoring individuals and families in their healing journey towards empowered living with workshops, stress management, therapeutic movement, breathwork, counseling, and healing attachment trauma.

The inaugural Women Rising event in September 2024 marked the exciting launch of this empowering program, bringing together inspiring women leaders and community members. Keynote speaker Port Moody Mayor Meghan Lahti set the stage with a powerful message on leadership and resilience, while special guest former Coquitlam Mayor Maxine Wilson shared her wisdom and experience. The event also introduced our upcoming Women Rising speakers, including Kara Kalin, Jessica Taylor, Maggie Stewart, Laura Dupont, and Jen Thaker, highlighting the diverse voices shaping our series. This celebratory evening was a tribute to the strength, achievements, and collective impact of women in our community.

Mayor Meghan Lahti

One of the longest serving council members in Port Moody history, Meghan was first elected to council in 1996. Residents for over 30 years, Meghan and her husband raised their three children in Port Moody. In addition to serving her community as a City councillor, Meghan has been a community volunteer through Girl Guides, Port Moody Soccer, Port Moody Lacrosse, Share Food Bank, Rotary, and more.

She has numerous interests and accomplishments, including world travel, dog sports, golf, hiking and cycling. In her professional career, Meghan spent almost 20 years working as an educator, college director, and provincial director for a large private post-secondary institution. During that time, she developed her skills as a regional manager overseeing several business entities and was responsible for hundreds of employees along with several multimillion dollar budgets.

Meghan is also the owner and operator of a small business. Meghan has led many city initiatives that she is very proud of and has represented the City of Port Moody regionally, federally, and internationally with distinction. She was honoured to represent the community in receiving the International Livable Communities Award for “Planning for the Future,” and on a personal level, she was the recipient of the national environmental Clements Award in 2019 in the category of “Most Outstanding Canadian Politician.

Mayor Meghan Lahti

One of Port Moody’s longest-serving council members since 1996, is a dedicated community leader and volunteer. With nearly 20 years in education and business management, she’s led numerous city initiatives, earning the International Livable Communities Award and the national Clements Award for environmental leadership.

Women in Politics

Women in Politics was an inspiring seminar focused on amplifying women’s voices in leadership and governance. Keynote speaker Anita Huberman, former CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, shared her insights on leadership and advocacy, drawing from her 18 years of experience championing businesses and communities. She then moderated a dynamic panel discussion featuring Surrey City Councillors Linda Annis and Pardeep Kooner, former Port Coquitlam City Councillor Laura Dupont, Coquitlam City Councillor Teri Towner, and activist Rochelle Prasad, who has run for office and champions education rights. This event provided invaluable perspectives on the challenges and triumphs of women in politics, encouraging more women to step into leadership roles.

Anita Huberman

Anita Huberman, Former CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade for 18 years, has led one of Canada’s top Boards of Trade, serving over 6,000 members. Recognized as a top leader in Vancouver, she’s an advocate for Surrey businesses, holds numerous awards, and serves on multiple national and regional councils. She is now the Chief Public Affairs Global Officer and Board Chair for Western Community College.

Networking & Communication

The Women Rising: Networking & Communication workshop was an engaging and interactive session designed to help women build confidence in professional and personal connections. Keynote speaker Jen Thaker, Founder of Thaker Financial Inc., shared her expertise on financial empowerment and the power of community in advancing women’s success. The workshop was led by Mallory Meyer, founder of White Wolf Reiki, who guided participants through neuroscience-based strategies and somatic practices to enhance communication, leadership, and authentic connection. Through hands-on activities and expert insights, attendees gained valuable tools to network effectively, express themselves with clarity, and build meaningful relationships for career and personal growth.

Women Driving Economic Growth

The Women Driving Economic Growth seminar explored the critical role women play in shaping and strengthening the economy. Keynote speaker Bukkie Adewuyi, Vice President of Internal Audit and Risk Advisory at Aritzia, shared insights from her extensive career in finance, risk management, and leadership. The event featured a thought-provoking panel discussion moderated by Zahra Alani, bringing together industry leaders Alyssa Berry, Mary Ellen Schaafsma, Dr. Sandra Song, and Bukkie Adewuyi to discuss challenges and opportunities for women in business, governance, and finance. This inspiring session highlighted strategies for economic empowerment, leadership, and driving meaningful change.

Bukkie Adewuyi

Bukkie is the Vice President for Internal Audit and Risk Advisory at Aritzia. She is a seasoned certified auditor and chartered accountant with over twenty-one years’ professional experience in audit, risk management, finance and strategy.

Prior to Aritzia, she spent over three years with Prospera Credit Union and before that, she built up a wealth of consulting experience in South Africa with major audit firms, PwC, Deloitte and Grant Thornton, exiting at Partner / Director level.

Bukkie is probably best known for her work in the community. She immigrated to Canada in 2019 and has distinguished herself as a passionate community advocate. She works with various organizations to elevate focus on immigrants, minority groups, minority businesses and women. In 2023, she was named a “YWCA woman of distinction”, raising $10,000 to assist women with childcare and early education. She was also identified as one of the “2022 Top 50 female leaders in Vancouver” by the women we admire

With over 15 years in Media and Communications she also specializes in Media Relations, Press Kits, Media & Talent Coaching, Writing and Editing.

Zahra is also an established foodie with a love and passion for culture, food and languages. She co-hosted and produced ‘Food Glorious Food’, a podcast through CKNW. Prior to Covid, you would often find her at Wine Festivals, Restaurant releases and reporting on extraordinary restaurants found on travels.

Newly appointed Dean at University Canada West, bringing over 20 years of leadership experience, Dr. Song will share insights from her extensive work across government, academic, and non-profit sectors. As Chair of the Public Policy & Administration Programs at Adler University, Dr. Song has been instrumental in shaping strategic initiatives that advance economic and social well-being.

Her expertise in policy development, strategic planning, and project management spans national and international contexts, including research collaborations in Japan, Brazil, Colombia, and Portugal.

Dr. Song’s background includes 12 years as a senior policy analyst for the federal government and leadership roles in public health at Concordia University of Edmonton. Her work has earned her four Fulbright Community Leadership Program grants, reflecting her commitment to fostering partnerships between government, academia, and community organizations.

The Assertiveness Workshop empowered participants with the skills to confidently advocate for themselves and others. Christina brings a diverse skillset, reflecting a combination of: 17 years of involvement in the DTES community, 13 years of sponsorship experience, a major in Psychology from SFU and eight years working with people who face disabilities. Women Advocating for Social Change

The Women Advocating for Social Change seminar empowered attendees with the knowledge and connections to drive meaningful impact in their communities. The event featured a keynote address by Levonne Abshire, an equity and disability advocate with over 20 years of leadership experience in education and health. Levonne shared insights on advocacy, inclusion, and amplifying marginalized voices, drawing from both her professional and lived experiences.

 

Following her keynote, Levonne moderated an engaging panel discussion featuring Annie Ohana, Isabella Wen, Dr. Elder Roberta Price, and Susan Bains—all leaders in advocacy and social change. The panel explored strategies for building advocacy networks, using storytelling to inspire action, and navigating systemic barriers to equity and justice. Whether participants were new to advocacy or experienced changemakers, this seminar provided valuable tools, inspiration, and a supportive community to further their efforts.

Levonne Abshire

Levonne Abshire (she/her), BEd.,MEd., COC, is a second-generation Filipina whose family immigrated to Canada in the 1960s and has lived as uninvited guests on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples: Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh for over 40 years.

Throughout her 20+ year career as a leader and administrator in education and health across K-12 schools, post-secondary education, and non-profit organizations, she has been committed to promoting individual and organizational wellbeing and belonging. Beyond her education and professional experience, it is her lived experience as a racialized woman and lone parent to an Autistic son that drives her commitment to equity and inclusion in educational policy. She is a disability advocate and ally in her community, volunteering with Family Support Institute BC, BCEdAccess, and Canucks Autism Network, organizations that support families and individuals with disabilities.

For over 30 years, Dr. Elder Roberta Price has actively shared her leadership, wisdom, and teachings at the University of British Columbia and throughout BC’s lower mainland to assist Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members in achieving improved outcomes in health care.

Her service as an Elder for almost 20 years has involved conducting critical research into inequities surrounding health care initiatives at UBC and providing knowledge to support many equity-based and culturally-safe research projects.

Currently an adjunct clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at UBC, she has also been active in the School of Nursing, providing an Indigenous voice and guidance on research projects about women, intimate partner violence, and mental health.

Elder Roberta’s leadership has been instrumental in the efforts of decolonizing health care and creating cultural safety and equity for Indigenous patients. She continues to help create shared spaces for Indigenous and western healing approaches in Canada.

Annie Ohana

Annie Ohana is Anti Oppression Curriculum Specialist, Community Organizer, and Secondary Public School Educator in Surrey BC. She is currently Indigenous Department Head at LA Matheson Secondary. She holds a Masters Degree in Equity Studies and has academic expertise in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Harm Reduction, and Anti Oppression Education.

She is a recipient of multiple awards for her intersectional justice work across every jurisdiction locally to internationally, from the Prime Minister’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2017, Anti Racism Leader through Province of BC and most recently a Top 10 finalist of the Global Teacher Prize.

Isabella Wen

Isabella Wen is a Grade 11 student from RE Mountain Secondary School driven by a passion for gender equity and the belief that adversity can be a seed for growth. She empowers young girls through various mediums such as assisting with women’s health research with a UBC affiliate, co-hosting a feminist podcast with over 70 episodes, and co-developing an AI exploration course for young girls at Soroptimist International.

Additionally, she has led public speaking and leadership workshops for young girls around the world, including Afghanistan, the USA, and right at home, Langley. With the belief that women can do anything they put their mind to, Isabella aims to continue her life-long learning journey while inspiring other girls to step out of their comfort zone.

Launching Your Own Venture

The Launching Your Own Venture event provided aspiring entrepreneurs and community leaders with valuable insights and practical strategies to turn their ideas into impactful businesses and social ventures.

 

The event featured an interactive workshop led by Rasie Bamigbade, a leadership coach, author, and founder of RB Jumpstart Coaching. Rasie shared key principles of self-leadership, mentorship, and strategic growth, empowering participants to take actionable steps toward launching and sustaining their ventures.

 

Following the workshop, Rasie moderated a panel discussion with Jessica Taylor, Kara Kalin, and Queen Alexis, each bringing unique expertise in entrepreneurship, personal transformation, and leadership. The panel explored topics such as overcoming challenges in starting a business, leveraging resources effectively, and the importance of community and collaboration in achieving long-term success.

 

Through engaging dialogue and shared experiences, this event inspired participants to pursue their entrepreneurial goals with confidence, equipping them with the tools and mindset needed for sustainable impact.
